All content within your LegalWorks database–including documents and email–is indexed for rapid search. LegalWorks Search includes two modes of searching: Standard Search and Advanced Search. To navigate to LegalWorks Search, click Search on the LegalWorks top navigation.
LegalWorks’ Standard Search is a simple search tool where you search by keyword.
Enter your search criteria and LegalWorks will return all content–including documents and email–that match that criteria. From within those search results you can narrow down your search by author, content type and date created.
Note that LegalWorks will search for your criteria within the content of email and documents such as Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF documents. (Note that PDF documents must be OCR’d to be searchable, as non-OCR documents are effectively images, not text.)
LegalWorks’ Advanced Search is a more granular, nuanced search function for documents. When at the LegalWorks Search screen, click Advanced to use the Advanced Search mode.
To begin, LegalWorks Advanced Search will display evey document in LegalWorks under any matter. From there, you can apply one or more filter to any of the columns (document fields). For example, you may want to display all documents, in any matter with a Doc Type of Complaint. Click the Doc Type column, then select Complaint to show all Complaints in LegalWorks, across all matters.
You can apply multiple filters to your search. For example, you can filter for two particular Doc Types, such as Complaint and Brief, then apply an additional filter layer such as filtering by a certain Doc Status, or Created By or any combination therein.
Once you’ve applied the filter(s) you require, LegalWorks will return the document that match that criteria. From here you can open any documents that are returned, or search for keywords within the returned documents in the Find a File box.
For example, you could filter for documents that are of the type Complaint or Brief, with a Doc Status of Final, created by user John Smith. If the results are still many documents, you can search within those results only for specific keywords that appear in the document by entering this criteria in the Find a File box.
Note again that LegalWorks search will search the contents of each document to find your search criteria. For more information on documents including document fields and tags, see: Working with Documents.
